Ballet Folklorico!  This troupe performs around 60 times per year and they certainly delivered.  Showcasing dances from different regions of Mexico, the dancers were enthusiastic and engaging.  This was a spectacular kick off to the entire event.

Today’s event celebrated the Mexican holiday of Dia De Los Ninos.  Lewisville has a large hispanic community and the event was well attended.  The event was 2 hours long with a 45 minute performance by Ballet Folklorico starting the party!  After their performance, the community space was opened up with several craft tables, book giveaways, button making, photo props, and coloring.  Carnival games were also set up with stickers to pass out to participants.  The games included an easy bean bag toss game, a moderately difficult bean bag toss game, a ring toss, and a mini-sports ball toss game.  The games were mostly attended by infants who used the rings as teethers and toddlers who wanted to throw anything anywhere.  One toddler used a mini soccer ball from a game to actually play soccer with her grandmother around the childrens area.  Despite the “unorthodox” approach to toss game rules, the toddlers were well watched by their guardians and nothing got too out of hand.

I helped to set up, run games, and take down the event.  It was a good example of using your Performance Checklist to make sure that you have everything needed for the event.  We hung curtains to create a dressing room complete with seating, cups and water, and chairs to rest between performances.  A small table for Ballet Folklorico’s sound system, including an extension cord, was placed in the dance area, and an audience area was taped off.  During the take down, the checklist became an inventory list to make sure everything was gathered up.   After the initial rush of setting up for the dancers, the staff was able to take a break and watch the performance before the final hour of crafts and games.  Even though the carnival games became the baby zone, the hour flew by.  The patrons seemed to enjoy the event and I saw a lot of milling about afterwards as everyone chatted with each other.  Whether the ballet or activities were a hit or not, the event worked very well at community building.
